Former President George H.W. Bush was admitted to a Houston hospital over the weekend to treat an infection that spread to his blood, a spokesman said in press release, but the 41st president “appears to be recovering.”
“President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood,” Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement issued Monday evening. “He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant.”
Bush’s hospitalization comes on the heels of Saturday’s funeral for his wife, Barbara Bush, who had been in failing health and passed away last Tuesday at the age of 92. The former president, who uses a wheelchair, greeted attendees at his wife’s funeral.
On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump wished Bush well during a joint appearance with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House.
“We all send our prayers to the Bush family as we wish former President George H.W. Bush a very speedy recovery,” Trump said.Bush, 93, has himself been in and out of hospitals in recent years to deal with various health problems, including twice last year with pneumonia.
